What is that black stuff on my roof?

The black stains on your roof are made up of a fungus or algae lacking chlorophyll. Its name is Gloeocapsa Magma.

Why is it on my roof?

These algae spores float through the air unseen—like pollen, dust, mold and mildew. Due to the lack of chlorophyll they don’t produce their own food, so when these spores land on a surface they can live on like your roof, they start to eat and grow. This fungus, along with other molds, is feeding on the organic matter used in the manufacturing of your shingle.

Where is it on my roof and why?

The damage or fungus growth often occurs first on the North Slope of the roof where shade is prevalent and moisture tends to accumulate. Once the sun heats the roof, the moisture trapped around the base of the granules begins evaporating. This raises the humidity on the surface of the shingle, thus creating a perfect breeding environment.

Why should I treat my roof?

Without treating your roof this fungus will continue to spread causing premature granule loss of your shingle. The granules represent the protection against damaging UV radiation and insulation provided by your shingles. Once this protective barrier is lost accelerated deterioration will occur.

How can I minimize the growth of moss, lichen and algae on my roof?

Overhanging trees and branches should be trimmed and not allowed to touch the roof. This will also help keep branches leaves and debris from building up and keeping your roof wet. Gutter and down spouts should be cleaned regularly to allow the water to quickly exit your roof. Down spouts should not drain directly onto another roof.
